Durham, NC --- The Nashville Sounds ran out to a 6-1 lead against the Durham Bulls then held on for a 6-5 victory at the DBAP on Friday night.
The Sounds (29-20) took a 4-0 lead against Bulls starter Brody Hopkins (L, 0-4) with four runs in the third, then added two against reliever Logan Workman in the fifth to establish a 6-1 advantage.
However, after a Tony Santa Maria homer in the fourth inning put the Bulls on the board, Durham (20-29) scored twice in the fifth and seventh, but could not get over the hump.
In the fifth, Tatem Levins and Santa Maria each delivered RBI-singles to cut the deficit to 6-3. In the seventh, Cooper Kinney tripled home Homer Bush, then scored on a groundout by Santa Maria to make it
6-5.
The Bulls loaded the bases in the eighth thanks to singles by Blake Sabol and Logan Davidson and a hit by
pitch, but Bush grounded into a force out at the plate followed by a pop out by Levins. Santa Maria drove in three runs in the loss.
The Sounds lead the series 3-games-to-1 with two to play. Reiss Knehr (W, 3-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 2/3 of an inning with two strikeouts.
Hopkins walked six over 2 2/3 innings, permitting four runs on two hits.
Joe Boyle (0-0, 6.75) is slated to start Saturday night at 6:45 PM ET against Tyson Hardin (0-0, 1.29).
Notes: Tony Santa Maria connected for his first Triple-A home run to right-center in the fourth inning against Sounds starter Coleman Crow. Santa Maria drove in three and has seven RBI in his seven Triple-A games... Hopkins threw 70 pitches across his 2 2/3 inning start, but just 32 strikes. Hopkins issued six walks and faced eight 3-ball counts against the 16 batters he faced.... Hayden Snelsire made his Triple-A debut with two scoreless innings. Snelsire was called up from Double-A Montgomery ahead of Thursday's game.
