Spartanburgers Threaten but Fall Short on Saturday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. After an early 1-0 lead on Saturday, Hub City fell behind 7-2 in the middle innings to Jersey Shore. The Spartanburgers (60-71, 26-39) got the tying runs into scoring position in the ninth but fell 7-5 to the BlueClaws (47-82, 21-43).

Enrique Segura (L, 1-6) got the ball for the 'Burgers after a 58-minute rain delay to start Saturday afternoon. After a scoreless top of the first, Hub City jumped on the board against Tanner Gresham (W, 3-5) in the bottom half. With two outs, Antonis Macias clocked a solo homer to grab a 1-0 lead.

Two pitches into the second, Jersey Shore tied the game on a Kodey Shojinaga homer. The BlueClaws took the lead in the third. After a pair of one-out walks, Nate Humphreys singled in a run. An RBI groundout and a Wuilfredo Antunez single made it 4-1 Jersey Shore. The BlueClaws snagged a fifth run off Segura in the fourth with two singles and a sacrifice fly.

Hub City charged a second run to Gresham's line in the third. Paxton Kling led off with a single. He stole second and took third on a passed ball. Maxton Martin's sacrifice fly brought him home.

The 'Burgers turned to Kamdyn Perry out of the bullpen for the fifth. With one on and two away, Antunez shot a two-run homer to center field to up the lead to 7-2. Perry settled in for a scoreless sixth and two outs of the seventh.

The Spartanburgers capitalized on a defensive miscue in the field from Jersey Shore in the fifth for a last run against Gresham. Sam Highfill came out of the 'pen and pitched two scoreless innings in the sixth and the seventh.

Hub City got seven scoreless outs from Cole Roland to finish the night in the field. Kevin Warunek entered for the eighth for Jersey Shore. After a one-out home run from Quincy Scott, two walks brought the tying run to the plate. A double play ended the threat.

Trailing by three in the ninth, Cal Stark led off with a single against Titan Kennedy-Hayes (S, 4). An out later, Kling was hit by a pitch to again bring the tying run to the plate. Martin hit a grounder to short, but Juan Villavicencio's throw to second sailed into right field. Stark scored and Kling and Martin stood in scoring position. A strikeout and a groundout back to the mound ended the game.

The Spartanburgers and BlueClaws finish the series and the season Sunday at Fifth Third Park at 2:05 p.m. ET. Hub City has not named a starter. Lefty Juan Amarante (2-1, 3.50 ERA) is set to go for Jersey Shore.
