Muñoz Records Sixth Consecutive Scoreless Outing in 8-5 Loss

Lucas Spence hit two home runs in the late innings to spearhead a rally, but the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (39-28,71-70) dropped game four of their six-game set against the Oklahoma City Comets (43-24,84-57) 8-5 on Friday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Oklahoma City plated a run in the opening inning before Chris Newell hit a home run to left field in the bottom of the second, extending the Comets’ early lead to 2-0.

The Space Cowboys threatened in the top of the fifth inning when Spence singled before Trevor Austin followed with a double to left field to put two runners on for Sugar Land. After Jake Meyers left the game due to injury, Cavan Biggio continued his at-bat and worked a walk to load the bases. However, a strikeout and a flyout ended the inning, leaving all three Space Cowboy runners stranded.

RHP Bryce Mayer settled in after allowing a run in each of the first two innings, firing two straight scoreless frames before surrendering another Comet run in the fifth. Mayer went on to throw 4.2 innings, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out six. RHP Trey McLoughlin relieved Mayer in the fifth inning and struck out the first batter he faced to strand the bases loaded.

Oklahoma City added two more unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend its lead to five before the Space Cowboys plated two runs of their own in the top of the seventh. César Salazar singled to lead off the inning and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch before Spence crushed his second home run of the series, cutting the deficit to 5-2.

The Comets broke the game open in the seventh inning, beginning the frame with back-to-back home runs from Ryan Fitzgerald and Matt Gorski to extend their lead to 7-2. Oklahoma City then worked four walks to add another run and push its advantage to six.

The Space Cowboys answered in the top of the eighth inning to pull closer. Zach Dezenzo and Salazar worked back-to-back walks to put two runners on base before Spence connected on his second home run of the game, a three-run shot that cut Oklahoma City’s lead to 8-5. A pair of walks by Austin and Biggio brought the potential tying run to the plate, but a strikeout from RHP Paul Gervase (S, 5) maintained the Comets’ three-run lead.

RHP Roddery Muñoz tossed a perfect eighth inning, striking out the first two batters he faced before inducing a groundout to end the frame and keep Oklahoma City off the board.

Gervase came back out in the ninth inning for the Comets and struck out all three batters he faced to close out the contest.

NOTABLE:

Lucas Spence went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI on Friday evening, extending his on-base streak to 10 games and his hitting streak to five games. Friday marked the second time this season Spence has hit multiple home runs in a game, with the first coming on June 18 while he was with Corpus Christi against San Antonio. His five RBI also marked a career high. Over his last 10 games, Spence is 10-for-31 with two doubles, five home runs, 10 RBI, seven walks and nine runs scored.
Trevor Austin went 2-for-2 with a double and two walks on Friday night. His fifth-inning double was his first career hit in Triple A, and his multi-hit outing was his first since August 20, when he was with Corpus Christi against Midland.
Zach Dezenzo worked a walk on Friday night, extending his streak to four consecutive games with a walk.
RHP Roddery Muñoz spun a perfect eighth inning and struck out two on Friday night. Muñoz has now made six consecutive scoreless appearances, hurling 6.0 innings while allowing just two hits and striking out 10.

The Space Cowboys continue their six-game set with the Comets on Saturday night. LHP Josh Hendrickson will get the start for Sugar Land while Oklahoma City will hand the ball to RHP Christian Romero.
