Tacoma Walks Off Sunday Finale as Bees Blow Multiple Leads

TACOMA, WASH. - Salt Lake held a 4-1 lead after five, was up 6-4 in the bottom of the ninth, but failed to complete a victory on Sunday. The Bees fell 7-6, in 10 innings, to Tacoma in the season finale between both squads. Leo Rivas provided the winning swing for the hosts on his single to center, aiding the Rainiers to five wins this week against the Bees.

Game Summary

The pitchers took center stage to open Sunday’s afternoon affair, with each starter firing two scoreless innings. Joel Hurtado looked to match Jhonathan Díaz’s zero in the third, but instead yielded a 398-foot solo shot to Willie MacIver that gave Tacoma a 1-0 lead.

Salt Lake’s bats awoke to create run support for Hurtado. Bryce Teodosio made it 2-1 Bees in the fourth, before Kyren Paris and Raudi Rodriguez did the job in the fifth. Paris singled ahead of Rodriguez’s triple, then the latter scored on a balk to go up 4-1.

Hurtado continued his fine outing, but ran into trouble in the fifth. Consecutive singles began the frame, yet the righty wasn’t fazed as he got the next three Rainiers to avoid damage.

Tacoma cut into the deficit in the sixth and seventh, scoring once in each frame to move the score to 4-3. Salt Lake got one run back in the eighth, thanks to Paris’ two-out RBI single. That run was immediately returned by the hosts, also cashing in with two outs for a 5-4 score.

In the ninth, the Bees carved out three singles that provided important insurance at 6-4. Cade Marlowe delivered the RBI on a shallow line drive into center field. Tacoma put together a game-tying rally off Kaleb Ort in the home half with three straight extra-base hits. Leo Rivas doubled to start the frame, before Nolan Jones hit his third homer in two days that evened the game at 6-6. Brady Choban entered with two runners on and pitched a zero to send the proceedings to extra innings.

Salt Lake could not produce a run in the extra stanza, as bad baserunning led to two outs on the bags. The ghostrunner was tagged out to start the frame, while a strong throw to the plate avoided a go-ahead run from scoring. In Tacoma’s half, a bunt single moved the placed runner 90 feet, ahead of a fielder’s choice that resulted in a rundown and runners at second and third. With a 2-1 count, Rivas came through, sending a 94 MPH sinker from Choban into center field to complete the comeback win and hand Salt Lake a fourth straight defeat.

Game Notes

• Salt Lake and Tacoma split the season-series 9-9 with the Bees going 8-4 at The Ballpark at America First Square and 1-5 at Cheney Stadium. Salt Lake is 4-20 at Tacoma over the past two seasons and have gone 25-51 overall against the Rainiers since 2021. The .338 win percentage only trails a .212 WPCT (7-26 record) at Constellation Field in that same timeframe.

• The Bees tallied four stolen bases on Sunday, its highest mark since a season-high six on June 11 at Reno and have collected a stolen base in six straight games. Salt Lake sits third in the league with 163 stolen bases this season and officially surpassed its 2025 total of 159.

• With today’s 10th inning defeat, the Bees moved to 5-7 on the year in extra innings and have dropped four consecutive extra inning contests. Salt Lake’s most recent victory in extras was on June 27 at Albuquerque, a 8-7 decision in 10 innings.

• For the second time this week, the Bees’ 1-2-3 hitters went 7-for-13 (.538) at the plate. Kyren Paris, Raudi Rodriguez and Pablo Reyes each recorded a multi-hit effort as part of this top-third performance. That batting average only trails a .600 (6-for-10) showing on May 21 vs. Sacramento. The seven hits by the trio are one shy of the season-high eight, set on July 21 vs. Omaha.

• Joel Hurtado finished two outs shy of a quality start, spinning 5.1 innings of two-run baseball today. The Dominican had his longest career outing at Triple-A as well as his longest outing allowing two runs or fewer since July 10 vs. Chattanooga at Double-A Rocket City. Hurtado did not issue a walk for the first time since June 5 vs. Columbus.

• Kyren Paris tallied a three-hit effort, his second straight multi-hit ledger and fourth over his most recent five games. He also drew two walks, his 12th Triple-A contest with multiple free passes this season and second in Tacoma (August 26). He has 50 walks with Salt Lake in 2026. Paris notched his 20th RBI of the month on an eighth-inning single, becoming the seventh PCL hitter in August to eclipse that milestone. It also marks back-to-back 20+ RBI months for Paris (22 in July, 20 in August).

• Ben Gobbel singled in the third and has hits in five of his last six games. The infielder is batting 12-for-31 (.387) on Sundays, third behind Pablo Reyes and Cade Marlowe for highest average on the day this season (min. 15 AB).

• Sebastián Rivero has walked in consecutive games and has reached in three of his last four games as a Bee. The catcher was reassigned to Salt Lake today after completing a MLB rehab assignment. Rivero later scored the Bees’ first run of the game, his second straight contest coming across home plate.

• Cade Marlowe doubled in the fourth to extend his hitting streak to four games as well as his 10-game on-base streak. The outfielder and former Tacoma Rainier tallied his first extra-base hit since homering on August 19 vs. Reno. Marlowe has 12 runs in the month of August, all but one coming in his most recent 10 games. He later completed a two-hit effort, delivering an ninth-inning RBI single for insurance. Marlowe finished 6-for-15 (.375) in four games at Cheney Stadium, his best showing in his third trip back to Tacoma in 2026 (batted. 250 with Las Vegas in each of two previous series).

• Bryce Teodosio compiled a three-hit afternoon, his first since August 18 vs. Reno. His two-run single gave Salt Lake a lead in the fourth and notched the outfielder’s first multi-RBI day since June 10 at Reno. Teodosio has a hit and RBI in two of his last three games. Teodosio stole second twice, to up his season total to 23 swipes and become the fourth Bee in franchise history to 70 career stolen bases.

• Raudi Rodriguez tripled home Paris for his third career three-bagger at Triple-A. The Dominican snapped a mini 0-for-10 skid with the triple and later secured a multi-hit effort for the sixth time at the level. Rodriguez has scored in back-to-back-games, as well as drawing a walk in consecutive contests. A double steal attempt gave him his fourth steal at Triple-A and 31 total across all levels this season.

• Pablo Reyes captured his 30th and 31st hits in the month of August. His 31 hits in the month only trail Denzer Guzman’s 42 in May for most in any month by a Bee this season. His multiple hit day increased his hitting streak to 11 games, the third time he’s reached his career-high. Reyes last tallied a hit streak of 11 games between May 9-23, 2017 with Double-A Altoona. A walk later helped increase his monthly OBP to a PCL-leading .494. Reyes reached 20 steals today, becoming the 15th PCL hitter to that mark in 2026. Additionally, Salt Lake is the only PCL squad to have 20+ steals from five different players (min. 20 GM at AAA).

• A five-pitch walk for Logan Porter represented his second free pass in three games.

• Jared Southard logged one frame of work and saw his scoreless streak halt at 8.1 innings. A runner he was responsible for came across after he exited during the seventh. Southard struck out one and has at least one punchout in four straight outings.

• As a pinch-hitter, Yolmer Sánchez reached on a walk for the fourth straight game, the longest active streak by a Bee. It is part of a longer six-game on-base streak for the utilityman, where he reached at least once in every game at Tacoma this week. Sánchez drew another free pass, his first multi-walk effort since July 31 at Sugar Land.

• Former Rainier Rob Kaminsky threw one inning of work and saw his streak of four straight scoreless outings end. The lefty gave up one run on a hit, walked one and struck out a Tacoma hitter.

• Kaleb Ort bookended August with blown saves, tossing 0.2 innings with four hits, two runs (both earned), a homer, and two strikeouts today. The closer last blew a save opportunity on August 2 at Sugar Land, also his last outing with two or more runs allowed. Between the two blown saves, Ort was brilliant with a 1.00 ERA in eight appearances (9.0 IP).

• Brady Choban was saddled with the loss, despite surrendering an unearned run in the 10th inning. The righty pitched twice this week at Tacoma, his only two August outings, and has yet to give up an earned run since returning from the injured list. Today, Choban went 1.1 innings, allowed two hits and walked one.
